Performance Grant
2020 Winter Grantee
Robert McCaskill and Alex Lyras
Robert McCaskill and Alex Lyras have collaborated on four solo shows for the stage: Desperlics, Unequalibrium, (New Playwrights: Best Plays and Best Men’s Monologues For the Twenty First Century) and The Common Air (Ovation, LA Drama Critics Awards). All three plays were recently published in a Trilogy by Smith & Krauss. “Plasticity” premiered at the Hudson Theater in Los Angeles and received an Ovation and LAScenie Award. As a writing team, they have sold TV pilots to NBC, FOX and Warner Brothers, developed an action comedy for Jerry Bruckheimer and a drama for Joel Silver. They are both members of the Writer’s Guild.
The Café Royal Cultural Foundation NYC awarded its first performance grant to Robert and Alex to realize their New York performance of “Plasticity” at the Greenwich House Theatre which ran from January 17, 2020 - February 17th, 2020.
In this multimedia production, performed at the Greenwich House Theater, a comatose man on his way to recovery recreates his identity by delving deeply into his memories while a circle of family members and loved ones form scheming camps over grave neurological decisions. A profound often comedic tour of the collective unconscious is coupled with the latest neuroscience in a compelling exploration of how the brain heals itself and ultimately creates the mind.
”Plasticity” is an inventively staged, skillfully acted, provocative and often comedic exploration into the expansive capabilities of the human mind. Starring Alex Lyras in a multi-faceted solo performance, and written jointly by Mr. Lyras and Robert McCaskill, who also directed.
